Chapter 19

Andrew signalled his brother and cousin silently during the ride back to Longbourn. He was riding a little behind the rest of the riders when they joined him. Both were curious about what Andrew wanted, but they waited for him to speak.

“Do not forget that the Duke and Duchess requested we do not inform Elizabeth that she is Lady Elizabeth until our parents and the Carringtons arrive on the morrow,” Andrew reminded the other two.

“If Lady Elizabeth asks a direct question about her status, I will not lie to her,” William stated. We all abhor deceit and dissembling would not earn her trust.”

“William has the right of it,” Richard agreed.

“I just wanted to remind you,” Andrew stated. “I agree with Hertfordshire, it will be much easier for her when the family is here and can answer all of her questions.”

“Rich, unless I am blind it seems to me that you are much taken with Lady Jane,” William prodded.

“She is fascinating, and one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, but we only met today. I have much to learn about her, and I am sure she would wish to know more about me as well,” Richard responded. “Unlike Bingley, I am interested in far more than a woman’s outward appearance. None of Hertfordshire’s daughters fawn over us for our titles and wealth; that is a positive thing we have learnt already.”

William had a vision in his mind’s eye of the intelligent emerald-green eyes he had noticed in Miss Carrington—Lady Elizabeth. “They all behave with the utmost propriety,” he stated distractedly as he looked ahead to where the lady he was thinking of rode with her older sisters. Anna, the young earl, and the two youngest Bennet daughters were riding abreast behind the older three sisters.

“Richard is not the only one who seems taken by one of the sisters,” Andrew observed as he inclined his head towards William.

“You are correct, Andy,” Richard agreed. “What say you, William?”

The Fitzwilliam brothers grinned at their cousin, who was so distracted he had heard not a word of what they said. Richard closed the distance, leaned over, and gave his cousin’s arm a gentle punch.

“What?” William asked with indignation.

“You were in your own world and did not hear us; where were you?” Andrew asked.

“My mind was more agreeably engaged than listening to your prattle,” William responded. Seeing his cousins would not allow him to remain silent, he elucidated. “I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow.”

“Your attention to our cousin has not been subtle. What do you intend to do about it?” Richard asked.

“The same as you intend with Lady Jane,” William replied. “I want to get to know her. More importantly, she needs to get to know me.” Seeing both cousins were about to interject, William said, “I am fully cognisant it will take time. She is about to find out she is the daughter
